Understanding Equine Lameness

Lameness is one of the most common and impactful health challenges in horses. It can range from subtle gait changes to obvious reluctance to bear weight. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential.

Our Evaluation Approach

  • Visual gait analysis at walk and trot on straight lines and circles
  • Flexion tests to isolate specific joints
  • Palpation to identify pain, swelling, and heat
  • Hoof testers to localize foot pain
  • Diagnostic nerve blocks to pinpoint the location of pain
  • X-rays and/or ultrasound imaging

Treatment and Follow-Up

Once we've identified the source of lameness, we develop a treatment and rehabilitation plan together — medication, joint injections, shoeing recommendations, controlled exercise, or referral for advanced treatment when appropriate.
